Fertilizer Use
Fertilizer can cause problems for our groundwater. These simple tips can help keep our water safe.
- Avoid fertilizer use if periods of high rainfall are anticipated. Precipitation can transport nutrients into groundwater and surface waters before they are absorbed by plants.
- Use the appropriate quantity of fertilizer specified by the manufacturer. Excess fertilizer is easily swept away by rain and wind. Over application is costly and does not benefit plants.
- Consider using compost or animal waste as a source of nutrients rather than inorganic fertilizers. The high amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous in many fertilizers have the potential to negatively affect groundwater quality.
- Plan your garden well. Use plant species that are drought resistant and suited to local conditions.
