Chief Election Officer Releases Results of Election Investigation April 29, 2015

Shortly after the 2014 general local election, the Chief Election Officer received complaints alleging that some electors voted more than once, which is a violation of the Local Government Act. Election officials took these complaints seriously and initiated an investigation.

Election officials engaged the services of Datafix, an Ontario based company that specializes in election data processing. Datafix used their software to conduct an analysis of the City’s voter registration database to identify potential offenders. This information was provided to the RCMP to initiate an investigation.

An investigation conducted by the RCMP did not reveal sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution. Therefore, the file has been closed by the RCMP and no further action will be taken.

Although charges will not be laid, it was important that the investigation was conducted to ensure the integrity of the election process. Citizens expect that the rules for elections will be strictly followed so that the outcomes will reflect the will of the electors.
