City Breaks Ground for Additional Ice Sheet at Newly Named Sardis Sports Complex April 6, 2018

Chilliwack, BC: A brand new sheet of ice is sliding into Chilliwack next spring to bring the City’s total number of ice rinks up to five. Members of the public are invited to join the City for the ground breaking event at 5725 Tyson Road on Tuesday, April 10 at 2:30 pm.

After extensive community consultation, the need for additional ice surface in Chilliwack was identified in the 2014-2023 Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan. Continued growth in youth sports and recreational hockey has made the establishment of an additional sheet of ice a priority. Recognizing this need, City Council accepted the proposal for the construction of the Twin Rinks Arena Addition Project from n.Wallace & Company Ltd. on March 20, 2018.

The new addition will increase ice availability for a wide variety of user groups, including minor hockey, figure skating, speed skating and ringette. Increasing current ice allocations will also expand the potential for these community programs to grow.

“This arena addition will create more recreational opportunities for Chilliwack families and supplement our existing facilities for user groups of all kinds,” said Mayor Gaetz. “I look forward to watching youth sports continue to grow in Chilliwack and hope this addition may even help foster some of the future Chilliwack Chiefs!”

The new arena will be built alongside the existing Twin Rinks facility, adding a third sheet of ice to the area and creating the newly named Sardis Sports Complex. The facility will feature seating for approximately 500 spectators, five team dressing rooms, an officials’ room, a canteen, washrooms and a large multipurpose space. This project is anticipated to reach substantial completion in Spring 2019.
