Regardless of your level, we invite you to come together and share your love of needle arts with other needlework enthusiasts. Whether you love cross-stitch, embroidery or other types of needle art, come work on your project with others who share the same passion. The Chilliwack Community Arts Council in collaboration with School District 33 Aboriginal Education Department are proud to present the vibrant and passionate art show: Inspirations by Cree Artist Jerry Whitehead. Whitehead, a Saskatchewan born artist, creates colourful and lively art with an emphasis on powwows and powwow dancers. He says, “Powwow dancers have been an ongoing theme in my work since I began painting. Seeing the dancers as a child had a lasting impression. The subject matter has been ideal for expressing a part of my culture as well as accommodating changes in my work”. His interest in art stems from his family: his grandmother worked with hides and his mother with beadwork and braided rugs. He credits his family’s encouragement in helping him to develop his art. As family man himself now, he more frequently incorporates family themes into his work. Along with his natural talent, Whitehead has obtained technical training and has a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Art from the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Whitehead currently resides in Vancouver, BC, but his work can be seen throughout western Canada. Folk Art of the World. Ages 7 - 12. Thursday, Jan. 15 - Feb. 5, 3:30 - 5:00. Take a journey around the world and learn about some of the indigenous cultures through traditional folk art. In this workshop you will be transported to Central America where you will explore the brightly colored shapes and patterns of the ‘Molas’ of Panama followed by a trip across the ocean to visit Central India to learn the art of the Gond tribe. Then back to the West Coast of BC and the inspirational art of the Haida people. Passports are not necessary. Cost: $65.

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. We have the board games and cards. You bring the family, your neighbours or come on your own and meet some new friends. All ages are invited.

This is the 68th annual Chilliwack Lions Club Music & Dance Festival

The festival begins with all genres of dance, starting with Ballet following the dance there is piano, strings, vocal, choral and woodwind and brass competition. The band competiti n is held at G.W. Exhibit opening reception at the Museum's Chambers Gallery on Saturday, February 21st from 12:00 – 2:00 pm. Our upcoming exhibit, Sí:tel Coast Salish Baskets, explores the making, trading and collecting of Coast Salish cedar baskets from the Museum’s collection as well as baskets from the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. The exhibit will look at the various uses and functions of cedar baskets throughout Chilliwack’s history, beginning with the daily use of the baskets before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 18th century. From the 1880s through the 1920s, cedar basket weaving was transformed from a practical domestic need to a source of necessary economic support for Coast Salish families. During this time, most baskets were made with the specific purpose of trading with Anglo-European families. Basket makers created new shapes, uses, weaves, dyes and decoration to accommodate Anglo-European tastes.

3D Winged Nature Creations Saturday Feb 21 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Ages 7-Adult. Using plaster, paint, canvas and your imagination instructor Pat Gerlach will guide you in creating an original winged creatures that might live in your garden or only in fairy tales. This is an easy and fun class that is open to every skill level and most ages. Cost: $19.

Vintage Mixed Media Wall Hanging. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2:00 - 4:30. Ages 13 - Adult. Come and join instructor Steph Brubaker and design and create a lovely piece of art for hanging on a doorknob, on a wall, a cupboard knob or as a special attachment to a gift. In this class you will be working with many different materials such as lace, fabrics, papers, buttons and more. Personalize it even more by incorporating personal items into your piece. Cost $35.
